Last weekend, eight friends piled into a limo to go on a tour of wineries on Long Island. They had hired the limo so they could enjoy the day without having to worry about getting into a drunk driving situation, but unfortunately, even when we make good decisions, we can still be harmed by people that don’t. Regrettably, that was what happened for these young women when the limo the friends were riding in was hit by a drunk driver, killing four of them and injuring four more, plus the limo driver. We learned today that one of the survivors, Melissa Crai, is an alumna of Alpha Xi Delta at the University of Rhode Island.

23-year-old Melissa is a resident of Scarsdale, NY and graduated from URI in 2014. According to the University of Rhode Island website, Melissa was president of her AXiD chapter and was an active member of the university’s Student Speech Language Hearing Association working with children with Autism while studying speech pathology at the university.

While details on the severity of Melissa’s injuries have not been made public, as of Monday evening, she was listed in serious/fair condition at Stony Brook Hospital. In order to help with her recovery costs, Melissa’s AXiD chapter at URI has started a GoFundMe page.

From GoFundMe:

“The women of Alpha Xi Delta Beta Upsilon appreciate any support you could give to our sister Melissa Crai who was recently involved in a tragic car accident. Melissa is an incredibly kind, optimistic, and courageous leader who built our chapter to where it is today. The funds raised here will go towards her recovery process. We appreciate any contributions made and continuous love sent to our sister.”

The ladies of AXiD at URI posted this message to their Facebook page on Tuesday:

Our chapter's thoughts and prayers go out to all the families and friends of the women who were involved in this past…
