Apparently High School Kids Have More Romantic, And Expensive, Love Lives Than You Do

Prom

Prom is almost here, you guys! Prom! You remember prom, right? Everyone told you that it would be one of the most important and memorable nights of your life and yet you somehow ended the evening puking into your best friend’s mom’s azalea bushes while your Spanx elastic dug ever deeper into your waist. Truly, a night to remember.

All sarcasm aside, apparently the youths of America deem prom so important that the average cost of a “promposal” (in which a young man or woman asks their desired date to the prom much in the manner of a marriage proposal) is $324. Teenagers in the midwest average around only $218 while those dirty, filthy yankees in the northeast average a mildly concerning $421. The average prom costs (including tickets, dress, limo, etc.) a total of $919, nationally.

All of these dollar signs, of course, raise the question: Where the hell are these teenagers getting so much money? My parents would have never signed off on something as dumb-sounding as a “promposal.” Especially considering the fact that prom isn’t so much a night to revel in as it is a night to tolerate. Between the forced awkward pictures, hanging out with people in your class who you hate, and trying to covertly drink, the night is just exhausting.

Plus, once you go to college formals, you realize that prom was basically a total starter wife. Sorry prom, but it’s true. We got together too young, and I moved on to bigger and better things.

Save your pennies, kids.

I came for the wine, but I stayed for the complimentary appetizer sampler plate.
