“It won’t happen to me.” This is a phrase that we hear often. We watch the news and hear the stories, and think that the tragedies will never strike close to home. Unfortunately, sometimes they do. Over the holiday weekend, Washington State University suffered not one, but two deadly car accidents.
According to DNews.com, the first crash was on U.S. Highway 195, early Friday evening. The driver’s name was Christine Hunter. She was 18-years old and a member of Delta Delta Delta at WSU. Her car was headed northbound and crossed over the center lane of the highway, where it collided with a truck headed in the opposite direction. Christine passed away. Her passenger was Sidney Ritter, and 18-year-old a member of Chi Omega, also at WSU. She was originally declared in critical condition, although her status has since been updated to serious.
The second accident happened Sunday afternoon, 16 miles outside of Colfax, on state Highway 26. A truck crossed the highway’s center lane and crashed into the car of Morgan Cope, a 20-year-old member of Pi Beta Phi at WSU. Morgan lost her life at the scene.
Today, Wednesday December 2nd, there will be a candlelight vigil at Washington State University for both Christine Hunter and Morgan Cope at 6 p.m. The event will take place behind Alpha Chi Omega, in Ruby Street Park. The event will be held until 6:30 p.m. at which time Delta Delta Delta will be hosting a Spaghetti Feed at their chapter house for the three women. Pi Beta Phi will be hosting a personal ceremony for Morgan at their chapter house directly following the Vigil at the park, after which they will be joining the women of Tri Delta at the Spaghetti Feed.
On Thursday December 3, Eastern Washington University will also be hosting a candlelight vigil on their campus, at Sutton Park at 7:00p.m.
Losing a sister is a terrible ordeal. Losing two wonderful, vivacious, and caring women from your Panhellenic community is heartbreaking. Please send your thoughts and prayers to the three women involved in these accidents, as well as their sisters and families. There is no official way to donate to any of the victims yet, but updates will be made as soon as there is.
Ice and snow can create terrible road conditions, and cause tragedies such as these all too often. Please remember to drive carefully this holiday season..
