Love it or hate it, Demi Lovato is one of those power females who is going to speak her mind even if it is going to offend someone. And who is the one superstar whose fans lose their mind every time someone says one bad thing about her? No, not Beyoncé (although, yes, that is another logical answer), but none other than Taylor Swift.
During an interview with Glamour magazine, Demi did not hold back her feelings about Taylor’s girl squad and the type of image they portray for young women. When Demi was asked what she did for feminism that Taylor was not doing, she had the following to say:
Just speaking out. I’m not afraid to talk about the fact that women get paid less than men in the United States and how unfair that is. Talking about it at all is doing the work. And I think every woman does her part in some way. But I think in certain situations, certain people could be doing more if they’re going to claim that as part of their brand. To be honest, and this will probably get me in trouble, I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body. It’s kind of this false image of what people should look like. And what they should be like, and it’s not real.
To be fair, they all are very thin, and as the interviewer at Glamour points out, “Well, there are many kinds of ‘normal’ bodies. I think what you’re getting at is there’s just one type of body in that squad,” one that Demi agrees is “not realistic.” The singer continued on her Taylor’s-not-a-feminist kick by dragging Katy Perry into the mix, as one does when you’re putting down the name of Taylor Swift. “And I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that’s not women’s empowerment. We all do things that aren’t, but I have to ask myself, Am I content with calling myself a feminist? Yes, because I speak out.”
And in true Swiftie form, they could NOT handle someone talking trash about their woman.
The “Confident” singer handled her business, confidently, of course.
And so, we continue upon the never-ending cycle of everyone thinking their opinion is the only one that matters. Can we all just focus on more important things in life? Like your Starbucks double star days. Okay, cool..
