Elon Students Raise Money To Make Cafeteria Worker’s Dream Come True

If you’re lucky enough, there’s a faculty member at your university who will leave an impact on your life. Maybe it’s a professor, an advisor, or even an RA. But there may be someone in your college career who makes you feel special, and takes the extra time out to make you feel important.

For Elon students Taylor Zisholtz and Lucy Smith-Williams, that person is Kathryn. Kathryn works at one of Elon’s on campus coffee shops, Acorn. According to Taylor and Lucy, Kathryn works five days a week, sometimes until 2 a.m., but the long hours don’t stop her from going the extra mile to take care of students. The two say that you can always count on Kathryn’s, “generous helping of down to earth sincerity and open friendliness served up with every plate she delivers.”

One Friday night, after discovering one of the girls is from Florida, Kathryn asked about the drive to Florida. Then she began to get emotional. I’m sure we can all relate to a good cry after several 2 a.m. nights in a row, am I right?

Kathryn’s eyes filled with tears as she spilled out her biggest dream in life is to take her son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons to Disney World. “I just want that so badly”, she confesses. I have never been anywhere but here.

Being the angels they are, Taylor and Lucy decided to make this dream come true and set up a GoFundMe page for Kathryn. In just a little over a month, the page raised well over it’s $6,500 goal, and is now at over $10,000. Feel inadequate yet?

The two then recorded the surprise gift to Kathryn, and you’ll want a couple tissues.

Faith in humanity: restored.
