Greeks Of The Week: February 10, 2017

Being Greek comes with a lot of benefits, but also a lot of flack. There are tons of headlines all over the internet about Greeks partying, getting shut down, and wreaking havoc. But more than that, we’re all out here doing a lot of good. Here are some of the most impressive Greeks in the country this week and their stories.

Alpha Omicron Pi at The University of Arkansas

You know how I know that your chapter is making a difference? When someone in another chapter writes me to tell me about it. Here’s an email that I got from a sister of Delta Gamma at The University of Arkansas:

I am a Delta Gamma at the University of Arkansas and the Alpha Omicron Pi chapter here has an amazing story.

On September 16, 2016 one of the newest sisters of AOPi was found dead in her car in the parking lot of a hotel in Fayetteville, her name was Lane Marrs. I personally knew her, as did many girls that went through recruitment here this past fall.

Lane committed suicide and in the wake of her death, her sisters began selling shirts that say “You Are So Loved-In Memory of Lane Marrs,” raising over $2000 which was donated to our school’s Counseling and Psychological Services center (CAPS).

Recently, the AOPi chapter has adopted CAPS as their local philanthropy. The women of this chapter decided to honor Lane and cope with their loss of a sister by volunteering as much as they are needed in the center to help reduce the stigma of mental health on campus. These incredible women have taken such a horrific event and found a way to honor their sister through helping others and truly are making an impact in our local community.

What a way to honor your sister’s memory, ladies.

There must be something in the water in the state of Arkansas, because their sororities are killing it this week!

The Alpha Gamma Delta sorority on the Arkansas State University campus hosted an event last weekend that they dubbed “Alpha Grabba Dress.”

The chapter house was transformed in a dress shop, where anyone could put a dress up for sale for any price they wanted, with a $5.00 fee per dress being collected by the sorority as a fundraiser for juvenile diabetes awareness and research.

The public was invited to come and shop the dresses and fundraising for the second annual event surpassed last year’s total of $800 before the event ended, allowing the sisters to make a donation to a cause close to their hearts. Alpha Gamma Delta Philanthropy Chair Marisa House told KAIT8, “My best friend in high school who was like a mentor to me, she had juvenile diabetes. It is really great to get to fundraise for that.”

Alpha Tau Omega at Marshall University

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and while I personally find it the most distasteful holiday of the entire year, I can’t fault the brothers of ATO at Marshall for leveraging Black Tuesday to try and raise some funds.

The guys are hosting their third annual “Teddy Bear Raffle” through Monday, February 13th to raise money for Hospice of Huntington, a local non-profit agency that “helps people with a life-limiting illness control the symptoms that keep them from living everyday life.”

The brothers are aiming to surpass a $3000 goal; you can support them at their GoFundMe page. And if you win the giant teddy bear…well, I wouldn’t turn it down.
