Guy Who Opened Fire At University Of Texas Sigma Chi Wanted To Join The Fraternity

UT sigma chi shooting

A UT Sigma Chi party ended abruptly this past weekend when three suspects opened fire at the off-campus fraternity house. 18-year-old Daniel Hamilton Magee was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Monday morning, while the other two suspects have yet to be arrested.

The shooting happened at around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning after security guard Edward Earls asked Magee to leave because he was causing problems. According to the arrest affidavit, “Magee became upset and had to be physically removed by Earls. When Magee got to the front gate of the fraternity house Magee made verbal threats to return to the party with an AK-47 rifle and shoot up the place.”

Forty-five minutes later, Magee returned to Sigma Chi with two friends and a gun. He fired one round at the security guard, hitting him in the foot. The injury is luckily non-life threatening and he’s expected to make a full recovery.

Before the shooting occurred, Magee expressed interest in joining Sigma Chi. He left his information with the brothers, which was used by police to help locate him after the incident. It didn’t take long for police to zero in on Magee, and last night the Austin police and a SWAT team swarmed the popular off-campus apartment complex 26 West looking for him. Magee was captured and taken to Tavis County Jail for booking and processing.

Z. Carter Figueroa, President of Sigma Chi, issued this statement on behalf of the chapter after the shooting:

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the security guard that was injured. We are working closely with local law enforcement, the university, and our advisers to properly resolve the investigation and bring the assailants to justice.”

It’s scary knowing that something like this can happen just because someone was mad they were kicked out of a party, but luckily no one was seriously injured and the guy was caught. As for Daniel Hamilton Magee, I feel pretty certain in saying that he will NOT be getting a bid from Sigma Chi (or any fraternity) this semester or, well, ever.
