Lambda Theta Alpha At USF Is Raising Money To Fly An Injured Sister Back From Cuba

Barbie

On August 4, University of South Florida senior, Barbara (Barbie) Jimenez, was visiting relatives outside of Havana, Cuba with her boyfriend. She was having a wonderful time, catching up with family and experiencing all the Cuba has to offer, when tragedy struck. The taxi she was riding in was hit head-on by a government transportation truck. The taxi driver was killed instantly and Jimenez, her boyfriend John Fox, and two relatives were injured.

According to WUSF News, “Fox, who works for Northrop Grumman in Melbourne, Florida, was airlifted from Havana to a Miami hospital, where he continues recovering from his injuries. The two other passengers, Jimenez’s cousin and aunt, are both in stable condition.” Barbie however, remained in a coma for five days after the accident. While she is now awake, her journey is far from over. Due to lapsed medical insurance and the high cost of medical transport flights, she is unable to afford the trip home so that she can continue to heal at home in Florida with her family.

So Barbie’s sisters at USF’s chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated have stepped up to help by starting a fundraising campaign they are calling “Bring Barbie Home.” The chapter asked for help, prayers, and good vibes on their Facebook page.

As some of you may know, our chapter sister, Barbara (Barbie) Jimenez, Spring 2012 #4, was involved in a catastrophic car accident leaving her and her loved ones unconscious. Barbie is still in Cuba and is unable to return home due to the extensive medical and transportation costs. At this time, we’re asking for your help! ANY help, such as a donation or a simple share, will be greatly appreciated.

WUSF News reports that “Jimenez was supposed to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy this fall. She’d also been studying for the LSAT exam and wanted to attend Florida State University’s law school.” Let’s help get her home so we can make those dreams come true.

To learn more about Barbie’s situation and to make a donation toward the cost of getting her back to the U.S., visit the “Bring Barbie Home” GoFundMe page.
