Lauren Conrad Does Her Part To End Body Shaming, Bans The Word 'Skinny' From Her Website

I think I love Lauren Conrad more today than I did when she was on “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills,” and it’s because of things like this. Conrad announced via her blog about the major change coming in June, where the theme for her website is ‘Shape Up.’

From LaurenConrad.com:

“When we’ve talked about getting in shape in the past, words like ‘skinny,’ ‘slim,’ and ‘thin’ have often come up,” wrote Conrad. “Starting this month, we’ll be banning any body shaming terms from the site, and replacing them with words like ‘fit’ ‘toned,’ and ‘healthy… The word skinny will now be reserved for skinny jeans … the focus is on being fit as opposed to a number on the scale. Every body is created differently — and healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes.’”

While I wholeheartedly agree with LC’s message and decision to focus on fitness rather than weight, I feel the need to stick up for my fellow skinny bitches and say that thin is a body type. Is it the ideal body type for everyone? Definitely not. People should aspire to be fit, not skinny, and I think that’s what LC is trying to get at.

Conrad further explained by stating that her website will still focus on giving fitness tips and continue the “bikini boot camp” series, but adds that it’s about getting fit, not dropping pounds on the scale.

It’s a brave move, and I hope other lifestyle blogs follow her lead. Conrad’s clothing lines, Paper Crown and LC Lauren Conrad, currently don’t offer plus sizes, but maybe that’s the next step in her shift towards body empowerment. If she’s going to embrace women of all sizes, it only makes sense that her clothing lines should align with that belief as well.

The important thing to take from this is that you are more than an objective number on a scale. Your goal of working out shouldn’t be to get “skinny,” it should be to get fit. If you’re thin, curvy, pear-shaped or anything else, fitness is about making yourself feel good and therefore look good. Confidence is the best accessory you can wear.
