Obnoxious LinkedIn Article Suggests You Shouldn’t Wear An Engagement Ring During An Interview

I don’t know too much about formal interviews, because I don’t exactly have a normal job. The only thing my boss needed to know was if I would be able to regularly offend people, and if I was willing to get drunk on Fridays and Uber home to an 8 p.m. hangover. I answered yes to both, and now I sit in a cubicle from nine to six, right next to a kid who has a Shake Weight and ten empty Monster cans on his desk. Post-grad life hasn’t been too rough thus far.

A recent LinkedIn article has come under fire for suggesting that “When interviewing for a job, lose the ring!” I clearly do not have any such ring, but I was still intrigued. At first, I thought it was going to be some type of situation where an older male colleague would want to be able to openly hit on his new female employee, which is pretty obnoxious. But the real reason is roughly 45 percent worse.

“When a man sees that ring he immediately assumes you are high maintenance. When the woman at the office who has the largest diamond on her finger, sees that ring, she will realize that if you are hired she will fall to second place and will, therefore, not like you. Lose the ring!”

The bitch doth protest, good sir. Your logic is extremely flawed.

First off, you don’t need a ring to be high maintenance. No man is trying to lock me down, and I’m still a huge pain in the ass. Second, isn’t the whole point of an engagement ring that you don’t pick it yourself? How is it okay that a woman is deemed high maintenance because her hubby splurged on a ring she might not have even asked for?

As for the whole, “Women see each other as competition so your female superior will automatically hate you if your rock is bigger” thing, I don’t even think I should respond to this. Ehh, fuck it, I will anyway: We aren’t all total cunts and it’s annoying that you automatically assume every woman is petty enough to hate people for such a trivial thing. Have a lil’ faith in us, please and thank you.

Maybe if I were engaged, I would be seriously offended by this. But honestly, it just makes me giggle. I agree that you have to put your best foot forward while interviewing for a position you really want. But I don’t think you should lie about who you are as a person unless you’re assuring your potential employer that you don’t do drugs. The notion that a ring could affect whether or not you’re hired is probably pretty baseless, and if it is true for your interviewer, you probably shouldn’t want to work for that sack of shit in the first place.
