Yep. You read that correctly. Pyotr Pavlensky, a Russian performance artist, went to Moscow’s Red Square on Sunday afternoon, stripped naked, sat on the pavement, and began nailing his scrotum into the ground. You know, because, why not? When asked why he performed this horrific act of self-mutilation, Pavlensky responded that his “performance” should be viewed “as a metaphor for the apathy, political indifference and fatalism of contemporary Russian society. As the government turns the country into one big prison, stealing from the people and using the money to grow and enrich the police apparatus and other repressive structures, society is allowing this, and forgetting its numerical advantage, is bringing the triumph of the police state closer by its inaction.” Yes, it all makes sense now.
Pavlensky was rushed to the hospital an hour after his cry for attention, but declined any help. He was subsequently taken to the police station, where I assume his cellmate was pretty peeved about the bruised and bloody scrotum belonging to his new jail buddy. According to the highly reputable news source, Buzzfeed, this is reportedly not Pavlensky’s first “performance” involving his own bodily harm. He has previously sewn his lips together and wrapped his own naked body in barbed wire. Guy sounds like a real psychopath. You know, the kind of man that tortured bunny rabbits and ripped the hair off of whatever the Russian equivalent of a Barbie Doll is as a kid. Whatever. I’m just glad he’s not our problem. Stick to your side of the pond, ya freak.
