Music Festival Dos And Don’ts

Festival

Music festival season is underway and for those of you lucky enough, that means you’ll have a least one awesome story to brag about share with everyone when you return to school. Music festivals are like super fun sleep away camps for adults. That’s if you do it right.

Do: Research and plan beforehand.

This most importantly means to plan out which DJs and artists you want to see most. Set times will overlap and you’ll have to compromise on which ones to go to since it’s impossible to go to them all. Besides that, make sure you’re packing everything you need. Some essentials will be mentioned throughout, but Google and Pinterest are your best bets for packing lists.

Don’t: Pack at the last minute.

I made this mistake and ended up at the camping festival with a bag with no tent in it. After forking over too much money for the overpriced ones they sell at the campgrounds, it’s safe to say I’ll be packing more than a day in advance for my next trip.

Do: Rock your festival fashion.

Festivals make it perfectly acceptable to wear outrageous and throwback clothing. You’re stupid if you don’t take advantage of this. This is the time to be wearing obnoxious printed patterns and weird textured tights. Shop at those stores you’re too afraid to go into, or dig out the accessories from your high school emo phase. Literally, anything goes. Pro tip: a fanny pack or backpack for your phone/money is essential. You don’t wanna lose that shit.

Don’t: Wear something you’ll regret.

Yes, you can let your fashion freak fly, but the basis of your outfit needs to be comfortable. After all, you’re wearing it to sweat and jump around in all day. Comfortable shoes (i.e. sneakers, Converse, boots), socks, bras without underwire (ouch), and breathable clothes are a must.

Do: Let all your responsibilities go.

Forget about anything you may be stressing about and let your mind be at complete ease. Everyone needs a break from real life every once in awhile, and a music festival is the perfect place to get that.

Don’t: Forget basic hygiene.

This is one of the only things you need to worry about. There’s nothing worse than choking on the B.O. of the person next to you. Deodorant and sunscreen are your new festival morning routine. Reapply as needed.

Do: Know your limit.

Some people use festivals as a time to drink and be merry. More power to you! Just remember that this is an entirely different drinking situation than you’re probably used to. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t be the person to puke all over the bathrooms. They are disgusting enough already.

Don’t: Be a square.

Whether you choose to drink at the festival or not is up to you. If you’re not for it, fine, but don’t get mad at others for doing it. Just worry about yourself.

Do: Dance your ass off.

You’ll be spending the entire day to your favorite music all day and night and burning hella calories. It’s like a fitness class at the gym with thousands of other participants. The music, of course, is 10x better than your average zumba class.

Don’t: Forget to replenish your system.

Your body is putting in work moving to the beats. Remember to hydrate excessively. Even more if you’re drinking alcohol or the sun is beating down. Eat some good food and get as much rest as possible.

Do: Capture the moment.

You’ll never want to forget your experience at any music festival you go to. Each and every one is something their own. Bring your phone and snap a few pics. Get a nice one of the whole squad. You’ll be showing the grandkids some day.

Don’t: Be a social media whore.

No one needs to see a five-minute snap story of your time. Don’t make your friends suffer through your repetitive videos. A couple shaky, blurry videos of the stage will be just fine.

Do: Live it up with people just like you.

Even the most socially inept can make friends at festivals. Find your common music likes, and you instantly have new bonds. Whoever said that music brings people together wasn’t lying.

Don’t: Be peer pressured into anything.

It might seem right to fit in with all the ~cool~ kids, but stay true to yourself. That’s always what’s important.

Do: Have the time of your life.

That’s the whole point of this, right?

Don’t: Have unrealistic expectations.

You won’t find who you really are or your destiny at a music festival. If that’s what you’re searching for, I suggest a psychic. Or maybe a psychiatrist.

Rave on.

When she isn't embarrassing herself by making out with randos on the dance floor, you can find her pretending it's normal to drink a glass of wine with breakfast every day. It's fun to sit down with her on Sunday mornings and hear how fucked up her weekend was.
