Only Psychopaths Like Gin And Tonics

gin and tonic

It took me a long time to find “my drink.” I started off with the classic vodka cranberry, but I was never a fan of the taste and it had too much sugar. I cycled through a few more drinks: vodka Redbull, vodka tonic, and I even gave whiskey coke a chance. None of them were just right. And then I found it. My perfect drink. The gin and tonic. Smooth, bitter, and oh so delicious. It’s all I order when I go out now, and apparently that makes me (and anyone else who thoroughly enjoys a nice cold gin and tonic with lime) a psychopath.

According to a study by researchers at Austria’s University of Innsbruck, gin has been linked to “psychopathic tendencies” when consumed in gin and tonic form, AKA the best way to consume gin. The study demonstrated that bitter taste preferences “are positively associated with malevolent personality traits.”

How malevolent, you ask? Participants in the study who loved the taste of gin and tonic displayed traits “positively associated with psychopathy, everyday sadism, trait aggression, and negatively associated with agreeableness.” I mean, I wouldn’t say I’m a freaking ray of sunshine, but I think calling me a psychopath and a sadist is taking it a bit far.

The study also found that a love for bitter foods like coffee, radishes, and celery is also “a robust predictor” for Machiavellianism and narcissism. Well, lock me in a padded room with a mirror because I wholeheartedly love all of those things.

When I think about it, I do love seeing terrible engagement photos on my Facebook timeline and screenshotting ugly babies and sending it in my group chats. Maybe I am a psychopath.
