Reverse Shampoo Your Hair And You Won't Have To Wash It As Often

Having fine hair has its advantages: it dries within a half hour, it takes even less time to style, and I save so much money on products. The major downside, though, is that if I don’t shower within 24 hours, my hair has enough grease to open a McDonald’s. I can’t sleep with my hair down because if it touches my face while I sleep, it gets oily. I’ve tried to train my hair to go without washing every other day, but after wearing a baseball cap three days in one week, I was totally over it. I just wanted to shave it off. But then, my roommate introduced me to a hair technique that has gotten me to resist a razor.

It’s called reverse shampooing. You condition your hair first and then shampoo it, which sounds like full penetration followed by delicate fingering. Both are good, but the order seems unnatural. You are also supposed to condition from root-to-tip, leave it on for 3-5 minutes, then shampoo on top of the conditioner, which goes against everything I stand for. However, this revolutionizing technique is changing lives.

The reason this works so well is because the conditioner softens the hair first, and then the shampoo removes the gunk and grime that weighs your hair down. Shampooing on top of the conditioner allows there to be a shield so that the shampoo removes everything without stripping natural oils. Not only does it take out the grease, it gives you extra volume that your hair has naturally, but was bogged down by bulk. Nina Dimachki, artistic director for Kérastase, says reverse shampooing “promotes a longer lasting blow dry and primes the hair before cleansing, allowing shampoo to distribute easier and more evenly.”

Hair care companies are trying to get in on the deal, but if you don’t feel like trying to find it in the labyrinth that is Target, you can use the shampoo and conditioner that is already creating moldy rings in your shower.

You’re welcome.
