The Importance of Picking The Perfect Perfume

Every person possesses certain traits that may be deemed undesirable. A lot of that can’t be helped, like if you’re batshit crazy, your eyes are too far apart, you have a wide-set vagina, the list goes on. There is however, one thing that can serve as a quick fix to making you at least seem more attractive: the way you smell. And control-top panties for the chunkies. (Okay, that’s two things. Whatever.)

One of the biggest mistakes women make is using cheap, generic perfume as their scent of choice, instead of using it as the post-gym quick fix for which they were intended. It’s great that the Walgreens “body mist” you bought was cheap, but you also smell cheap. If your perfume comes in a plastic bottle, don’t be surprised when it only lasts 30 minutes. A real perfume only requires 1-2 sprays, and your scent should last through morning and leave a nice memory of how amazing you are on his pillow. You know, if you care about that. You can identify a real perfume by the elegant glass bottle it comes in, adorned with the words “Eau De Parfum” somewhere on the label. No, I don’t know what those words mean. Yes, I’m pretty sure they’re French, and the French are elite smell-makers. Or something.

Most importantly, every celebrity and their mother (quite literally, if we’re talking Kardashians) is all about promoting themselves, so most of them are hopping on the I-need-my-own-fragrance bandwagon. Here are a few hints. Just because you bought the perfume that Justin Bieber slapped his name on and called “Girlfriend,” does not mean you will ever be his girlfriend. Britney Spears’ “Fantasy,” reeking of green apple Laffy Taffy and Nair, will not turn you into some sexy male model’s fantasy. It can’t even turn her into some sexy male model’s fantasy. Not a straight, sexy male model, anyway. And for the love of all that is classy, DO NOT buy Paris Hilton’s fragrances, unless of course you want to smell like washed-up, talentless, sex-tape-making, celebrity has-been. My point is, stop settling for second-rate fragrances just because a celebrity endorses it and Walmart wrapped it in a pretty gift basket with a like-scented body wash, lotion, and hand soap. Celebrities’ jobs are to entertain you, not to make you smell pretty. Stick with the people who know what they’re doing. Perhaps you’ve heard a few of the names: Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Dolce and Gabbana, Dior, you know, the designers who aren’t going to have you smelling like strawberry bubblegum. If you’re new to the whole smelling decent thing, here are seven of today’s best-selling fragrances that I’ve personally tried and loved.

1. Chanel No. 5 – Chanel

It’s Blair Waldorf’s signature scent, and she’s my idol so, of course it’s number one, but even if you’re not obsessed with Blair, it’s still a classic fragrance as essential as a little black dress. This should be a staple in every woman’s perfume collection. It defines femininity and adds elegance to any outfit. This is definitely a must-have accessory to a timeless and clean wardrobe.

2. Miss Dior – Dior

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Around since 1947, Miss Dior continues to win awards and dominate the market. It’s absolutely feminine with a deep floral scent, but boasts a distinguishing twist of edginess. It’s elegance with an attitude.

3. Flowerbomb – Viktor & Rolf

I never thought “beautiful” could describe a scent, but it’s the only word that does Flowerbomb justice. It’s an explosion of floral scents that will instantly relax you and relieve stress. It’s great for evening wear and worth every dollar (which is good because it’s definitely not cheap). Not to mention, it was voted a men’s favorite in 2012.

4. Michael Kors – Michael Kors

This perfume is modern, sensual, and warm. The exotic spices and Moroccan scent make it especially lovely in the fall and winter. It’s a bold choice that will undoubtedly get you noticed.

5. Light Blue – Dolce and Gabbana

This fragrance is mildly priced and carried in every department store. It’s citrus-based which makes it extremely light and fresh. It’s got a cool, crisp feel, making it a great summer fragrance.

6. Daisy – Marc Jacobs

The only thing cuter than the bottle it comes in is the vintage, floral scent on the inside. It’s sparkling and elegant which makes it great for everyday use, with a deep and eclectic tone that makes it wearable in the evenings as well.

7. Viva La Juicy – Juicy Couture

This is easily one of the most popular scents among college women. All three of my roommates use and love it. The scent is exceedingly sweet with a mix of berries, citrus, flowers, and vanilla, making it perfect for the younger crowd. Plus, it’s easily affordable on a college budget.
