The Met Gala: The Good, The Bad, The WTF

In case you don’t know, the Met Gala was last night. In case you don’t know what the Met Gala is, it’s the only night of year when Anna Wintour willingly leaves her tomb and celebrates the opening of the Fashion Institute’s exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is everything. It’s glamorous, it’s star-studded, and it’s a night full of reasons to worship Tom Ford. The best part is that a broad spectrum of celebrities are in attendance; everyone from Beyonce to Lana del Ray. Unfortunately, not everyone looks as fabulous as they should. Fortunately, I’ve compiled a list of the best, worst, and most confusing looks of the night.

The Best

5. Katharine McPhee

Last night, Katharine completely surprised and impressed in Elie Saab. The unexpected orange color of her dress was a welcome pop on the red carpet admist a lot black and navy, and the plunging neckline showed just enough cleavage. She accented her gown with gold accessories, and her look was actually glowing. Gowns with too much beading can either be a hit or a disaster, and she nailed it.

4. Heidi Klum

I’m a little over her being perfect, foreign, and blonde, but I also worship her for it. Last night, the recently separated mother of four was radiating perfection in a navy Escada lace number. She kept her makeup and hair on the natural-looking side, and she looked fabulous. I approve.

3. Hilary Swank

The Oscar winner stunned in a floor-length, high neck red Michael Kors halter gown. From her glamorous waves to her Fred Leighton teardrop earrings, everything about Hilary’s look was flawless.

2. Ashley Greene

The girl who plays a sparkly vampire absolutely sparkled in Donna Karan Atelier. She had this one-shoulder, draped white number that looked absolutely divine. She was able to channel Old-Hollywood glamour and look effortlessly ethereal all at once. Win.

1. Lea Michele

The Glee star, who I’m actually not a huge fan of, absolutely killed it last night in Diane von Furstenberg. She took a definite risk with an entirely sequined navy blue gown, but it worked. The neckline was plunging, but didn’t show too much cleavage. She completed the look with an understated updo and some gorgeous Louboutins. Basically, she looked like Ariel, if Ariel weren’t a ginger, and had grown up and gotten super rich. I loved it.

Honorable mentions: Dianna Agron, Nina Dobrev, Dakota Fanning, Gisele Bundchen and Amber Heard.

The Worst:

5. Gwyneth Paltrow

I actually cried tears of joy when Gwyn showed up at the Oscars in the white Tom Ford WITH A CAPE. So naturally, I was expecting something awesome last night, and instead, she looked like a cocktail waitress/a middle-grade call girl in a teeny tiny Prada number. I was devastated.

4. Emma Stone

Emma is always hit or miss on red carpets, and last night she was a definite miss. Dressed in Lanvin, Emma looked more like she was ready for high-school homecoming, and less for the most glamorous night of the year. She topped off her look with a prom-style updo, and I hated everything about it.

3. Leighton Meester

Blair Waldorf would be ashamed. Meester wore a champagne colored Marchesa and completed her look with way too dark lipstick. The dress did nothing for her. The color drowned out her skin, and the A-line skirt did nothing for figure flattery.

2. Claire Danes

Where Lea Michele went right with the plunging neckline, Claire Danes went horribly, horribly wrong. Her white J Mendel looked a little too much like a bathroom robe for my liking. With her retro hair and cat eye makeup, I was seeing more Vanna White than killer red carpet look.

1. Lana Del Ray

She was born to die…for treating the Met Ball like a costume party. She wore a sequined Joseph Altuzarra gown and a black cape, complete with super gothic-looking dark lipstick. Gwyneth already did the cape thing, and she killed it. Lana couldn’t compete, and she looked terrible.

WTF?

5. Kristen Stewart

The annoying, totally awkward, lip-biting Twilight star evoked so many feelings of confusion in me when she showed up in a multi-colored, multi-print Balenciaga last night. Her super-pale complexion didn’t help, and her white lace up shoes only added confusion to the already too-busy look.

4. Rihanna

I just wish she would go away. She looked like a zombie-poacher last night, mainly because her Tom Ford crocodile print black dress did nothing for her, and her hair and makeup looked like she was on drugs. I was scared, but everything about her has been scary for quite some time now.

3. Carey Mulligan

I don’t know why she was so shiny. She looked more like a Jetson and less like a fashionista last night in an over-blinged, super short Prada number last night. Too many scales, too little makeup, I just can’t.

2. Beyonce

Beyonce looked like the Black Swan’s stripper cousin in Givenchy Haute Couture last night. It was too sheer, too sequined, and too blue to make any impact other than one of confusion. She does know this is the Met Ball, not a rap concert, right?

1. Florence Welch

Florence could have used a machine to destroy her look. Clad in McQueen, I’m pretty sure Alexander rolled over in his grave after she stepped out in this layered, lace number. All I could say was…WTF?

Also, I’d like to give a big shout out to Hellen Keller for styling half of the celebs who showed up last night.
