The Real Reason Recruitment Sucks Is Because You Make It Suck

Recruitment season is one of the most anticipated, fun, and exciting times during the semester for every sorority girl, or so that’s what we make it look like. The truth is sorority recruitment is the most soul-sucking, glitter in your eyes, need-a-vodka-soda-at-the-end-of-each-day kind of torture.

The person behind this madness is probably the perkiest and outgoing person in your sorority, otherwise known as the Recruitment Chair. This person, believe it or not, hates recruitment season more than your whole house combined. Why? Because of all of you bitches who make recruitment harder than it actually is.

The reason recruitment sucks is because of all of you. The sisters who “can’t wait till this is over” or who “hate talking to PNMs” are what make this job more stressful than it actually is. It is the people that make these tasks as miserable as they can be. Try to turn back time (way back for some of you old AF seniors) and remember when you were a PNM. Do you remember how fun it was? Do you remember how awesome the sisters were or how amazing Greek life seemed just by going through recruitment and being on the “outside”?

I was the Recruitment Chair for my sorority for two and a half years and loved how fun and exciting the process was until I had to engage my whole house in actually being social with girls they didn’t know, tell them how to dress for certain events, and the hardest task of all: keeping them all sober for the entirety of each event.

Think about the stresses the Recruitment Chair has to deal with during recruitment season. The Recruitment Chair transforms your hot mess of a sorority into a professional, fun, and perfect “home away from home” for PNMs to want to join. Basically, without the Recruitment Chair, the whole sorority would be disorganized, half drunk, and half in the same clothes as this past weekend’s bar crawl to meet future members of the sorority — that is if they even make it to the event on time (some sisters may even show up to the event on their way home from a walk of shame).

Now couple the stresses of perfection with the fact that the whole house is full of girls who don’t want to be at these events and who hate the recruitment chair for making them look presentable at this early hour and you have yourself a whole house of sassy sorority girls bickering, complaining, and fighting with the Recruitment Chair.

Let me inform all of you actives who show up pissed off at the Recruitment Chair during recruitment season: she probably hates you all more for how childish and annoying you all act during this time. She probably feels under appreciated for all of the hard work she does, and her cheeks probably hurt after a day event meeting hundreds of PNMs. We get it. You don’t know these PNMs and you don’t care because you already have a little (or two), and you’re just counting down the minutes until happy hour kicks in and you can slip out the back door, take off your letters, and run to the local bar. But trust me, the Recruitment Chair feels this way x10. She sees more and more PNMs walk through that door and calculates in her head how much longer these girls will take to meet, talk to, and gather information from before they can leave and she can take tequila shots to her face alone at the bar (or even in her room).

So please, when you’re in that semesterly “recruitment rut” just think about how the Recruitment Chair feels and hold your complaining or criticisms for your boyfriend or your pledge class later that night. Always remember that because of the Recruitment Chair, you have nothing to worry about. Not your hair, outfits, food, or event planning and times, because she’s already got that covered. Keep her in mind when your tab is open and she walks into the bar an hour and a half later than the whole house did because she was still fake smiling and making sure all of the PNMs had a great time and that they remember your sorority’s letters before they fall asleep that night.

At the end of the day, you are what makes recruitment fun or a bust, so perk up your fake smiles, throw that glitter as high as you can and rush your ass off. And at the end of each day grab your Recruitment Chair, buy her her favorite mixed drink (or have the boys you were already flirting with pick up her drink order) and say thank you, because without her your sorority would get no pledges for that semester, and then where would we all be?
