The Skinny on Chris Christie’s Weight Loss Surgery

It looks as though Governor Chris Christie is making serious efforts to establish himself as a legitimate and credible candidate in the eyes of the general public for 2016. While the conservative leader of New Jersey is loved by many, Christie has recently been chastised and publicly shamed for his weight. That however, is likely to be a thing of the past. News broke yesterday that the current governor of the Garden State elected to have weight loss surgery this past February and has reportedly already shed upwards of forty pounds.

In December of last year, Governor Christie’s weight made the national spotlight when in an incredibly uncomfortable interview, Barbara Walters asked him if he was too heavy to be president. Christie scoffed at the idea calling it “absolutely ridiculous” and stating that it had not interfered with his current job as governor, but the damage was done, and the elephant in the room, so to speak, had been publicly identified. Was Chris Christie’s weight holding him back from higher office?

We are now in an age where the First Lady has a say in what schools offer for lunch and a very prominent northern mayor attempted to control the size of sodas for sale in his city. Yes, obesity is a growing issue; more than one third of American adults are classified as obese, but is it the government’s business? Aside from maybe public service announcements encouraging citizens to take care of themselves, should the government really have any say in what we eat or how often we work out? Call me crazy, maybe I’ve spent too much time around my ‘birther’ grandmother, but aren’t we treading on scary ground?

Christie claims to have elected to do the surgery for personal, rather than political reasons, and I really hope this is true. He stated:

“I know it sounds crazy to say that running for president is minor, but in the grand scheme of things, it was looking at Mary Pat and the kids and going, ‘I have to do this for them, even if I don’t give a crap about myself.’”

I guess what I’m getting at, is that Chris Christie being overweight should never have been our fucking concern, and quite honestly, I’m a little pissed off at Barbara Walters (in all her left wing agenda glory) for making it such a big issue. The fact of the matter is that Chris Christie is a good leader.

Since being sworn in in January of 2010, New Jersey, under Christie’s leadership, has seen a drop in unemployment and in increase in job creation. He has dealt with a national disaster. He has cut taxes. He is pro-individual and anti-big government.

News stories have been breaking over the past day, asking if Christie’s weight loss surgery will allow him to join the ranks of other likely candidates such as Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, and Marco Rubio, but I think that’s kind of bullshit. Hasn’t he always been a viable option for 2016?

In the same way that I don’t give a shit about what Michelle Obama is wearing, I do not care if Chris Christie is overweight. Don’t care. I do care about sequestration. I do care about our staggering unemployment rate of 7.6 percent. I do care that as a working professional, I buy into a system that I will never see. I do care about Obamacare and its catastrophic affects. So excuse me, Barbara Walters, if I don’t give a shit about Chris Christie being overweight. There are bigger issues at hand (no pun intended).

Chris Christie’s weight loss surgery was his choice. I only hope that he truly did it for personal reasons, and not in an effort to gain votes, because the truth is, I could give two fucks about our president’s weight; the current one seems to be in stellar shape and I cannot say the same thing for his record. All I care about in a president is the ability to lead and the ability to fix this mess that we’re in. I don’t know if Christie will be the next nominee. I don’t even know if he will run, but I do know, that an overweight Chris Christie would do a hell of a better job than a fit Barack Obama.
