TIME Releases Rankings Of Most Popular Fraternities, Is Completely Bogus

TIME is a pretty reputable source, no? So when TIME recently reported on how popular each fraternity was, I thought that maybe it would hold some weight. Surely, they’d go to at least moderate lengths for accuracy on this? Imagine my surprise when the map they provided on which fraternity was most popular in each state came from GreekRank, the third tier gossip site for Greeks, after CollegeACB, and well behind YikYak.

TIME Releases Rankings Of Most Popular Fraternities, Is Completely Bogus

As it turns out, their numbers are gathered by mere number of chapters per state, not by number of members. IFC chapters are counted alongside HB fraternities, which would also, assumedly, skew the numbers. The methodology:

Active chapters are aggregated by state to determine winners. When fraternities tie for chapter numbers, like in Alaska with fewer campuses to extend influence, the most senior fraternity takes first place.

It’s no surprise that non-Greeks in the media just don’t understand Greek life. To view the entire interactive map, head over to TIME.
