About this time last year, I wrote about a charity event hosted by Tri Delt and Delta Sig at the University of Maryland College Park that involved puppies. I, like most people, am a sucker for anything involving dogs, so I was pretty psyched about covering this particular philanthropy. And I’m even more excited to report that the event was held again this year, and was even more successful.
Much like last year’s inaugural “Delta Dogs” event, members of the university community were invited to come out and hang with dogs from Prince George’s County Animal Shelter, as well as bring their own pups to play. There was no charge for admission, but a donation table was set up at the event, along with raffles. While last year’s event went well, with $500 raised for the shelter, 900 attendees, and about 20 pups playing, this year’s event knocked it out of the park: more than 1,600 students and faculty attended to play with the 40 plus canines on hand, and over $1,000 was raised for the shelter.
The planner of last year’s event, Zachary Pelczar, is now his chapter’s president and told us that while last year’s event was successful, the chapters really wanted to go bigger and better this year.
“Last year we had just under a 1,000 guests but hit roadblocks when trying to reach our fundraising goal. I wanted to see us set higher goals and I knew we had the capability to achieve that this year. It’s amazing how quickly the brothers of Delta Sig and the sisters of Tri Delta rallied around the idea of doing this event again. We set out to raise more money for the shelter and bring more students and faculty together during this event,” said Pelczar.
And while the money is surely nice, Luke Harley, Delta Sig’s co-philanthropy chair, said that the organizations’ objective for the event was much bigger than that. “Our goal with this now annual event is to raise as much awareness as possible for sheltered dogs and really get the community excited about adopting these animals,” said Harley.
