UT Austin Students Protesting New Campus Carry Law By Bringing Dildos To Class

Keep Austin weird, right?

It seems like there’s a new mass shooting every day, and according to this calendar published by the Washington Post, there kind of is. School shootings are even more common, which is why some legislators in Texas felt like students had a right to protect themselves (and others) from a shooter on campus.

Hence the passing of Senate Bill 11. This legislation allows students (with concealed handgun licenses) to carry concealed weapons on campus, and it will go into effect at The University of Texas at Austin on August 1, 2016.

With this new law being enacted so quickly, some students are questioning how this piece of legislation can pass with flying colors while other, more outdated laws are still on the books. One of those laws, in both the Texas penal code (LOL) and in the University of Texas’ rulebook forbids individuals from displaying or distributing obscene materials. Like big fat dildos.

Jessica Jin, a music student at UT, started a Facebook event called “Campus (DILDO) Carry” to protest Senate Bill 11 and the absurdity of guns being allowed in the classroom, but not dildos.

From Facebook:

The State of Texas has decided that it is not at all obnoxious to allow deadly concealed weapons in classrooms, however it DOES have strict rules about free sexual expression, to protect your innocence. You would receive a citation for taking a DILDO to class before you would get in trouble for taking a gun to class. Heaven forbid the penis.

Starting on the first day of Long Session classes on August 24, 2016, we are strapping gigantic swinging dildos to our backpacks in protest of campus carry.

ANYBODY can participate in solidarity: alum, non-UT students, people outside of Texas. Come one dildo, come all dildos.

Like any social movement, this protest has a hashtag: #CocksNotGlocks. Regardless of your opinion on gun control, you have to admit, it’s kind of funny. Laugh. It’s a joke.

There are 34,000 people invited to the event page, with 7,800 people who said they will be participating in the mass dildo demonstration. The Facebook page has amassed a ton of comments, from people praising the protest to people actually having insightful debates on gun control.

And then there are the idiots. This is Facebook, after all.

The dildo protesters don’t actually think carrying dildos around will stop a shooter, but it’s a fun, cheeky way to voice their opinions on laws they feel are unjust: the lawful campus carry and the unlawful brandishing of dildos. It’s a joke, but it’s also provokes a serious commentary on gun control.

There are people currently fighting it out in the comments, but I detest arguments and would rather laugh with people than fight. So here’s a fun game: replace the word “gun” for “dildo” in pro-gun sayings, and voila, you have instant comedy gold:

  • “Dildo’s don’t fuck people. People fuck people.”
  • “I have a very strict gun dildo control policy. If there’s a gun dildo around, I want to be in control of it. – Clint Eastwood (JK)”
  • “I don’t have a gun dildo problem. I have a safe sex toy problem.”
  • Gun Dildo ownership. An American tradition.”
  • “Better to have a gun dildo and not need it, than to need a gun dildo and not have it.”

BRB. Going to buy a dildo in the name of political activism.
