We Need To Talk About What’s Going On With Greek Life At WVU

It’s been a rough week for Greeks at West Virginia University. Here is the “Week in Greek” at WVU:

Tuesday, April 5th: The Delta Tau Delta fraternity chapter is suspended by their headquarters after chapter member Stephen Budkey’s YouTube audition tape for MTV’s The Real World is discovered online. According to Gazette Mail, IFC “said the video showed the student touring the fraternity house while making inappropriate comments about women, describing social functions that violate the council’s conduct code and referencing activities that violated Delta Tau Delta’s values.” Per The Mirror, the tape included such gems from Budkey as:

RE: His Room: “I’m sorry guys it’s a little messy. I’m going to be honest with you, my b***hes haven’t come to clean it up yet but you know after spring break they’ll be there and it’ll be real tidy.”

RE: His alleged sex life: “People on audition tapes are always like, ‘That’s where the magic happens. That’s bulls***, the magic happens everywhere. Behind the dumpster, outside, in a bathroom, in my car, sometimes in my room, you never know. It happens everywhere.”

Classy dude.

Tuesday, April 5th: According to The DPost, former Panhellenic Council President, Brigette Marie Lajoie, 21, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., was charged with burglary in connection to a break-in at the Sig Ep fraternity house around 2:40am. The site said, “According to the complaint, Lajoie said she drove up to the house with her face covered and entered through a backyard window with an unidentified man. Property was later reported missing from the house.” Lajoie was caught when she got her car stuck while trying to drive away. WVU Police Chief Bob Roberts said, “alcohol was a factor in the incident.” So she was drunk driving too? Awesome.

Wednesday, April 6th: Two additional fraternity chapters land in hot water. First, Sigma Chi was suspended after a social event that took place over the weekend violated several policies; an investigation is pending. Director of Greek Life, Roy Baker, told WDTV: “I am extremely disappointed in what appears to be deliberate ignoring of University and fraternity regulations by the members and leadership of the chapter.”

Then Sigma Nu was placed on social suspension for the remainder of the year after “the chapter apparently planned a social function that included violations of the fraternity’s risk management policies and procedures.” Dean of Students Corey Farris said in relation to this suspension, “The bar has been raised of what we expect out of our students at WVU. By raising the bar, that also means holding students accountable when their actions are not consistent with the values and goals of the university.”

So what the hell is going on WVU? Is this simply a case of spring fever? Is there something in the water in Morgantown? It’s only Thursday, we’ll have to see how the rest of the week turns out.
