In upstate New York, a woman was arrested for driving with a BAC more than four times the legal limit. However, when she told the officer she hadn’t been drinking that night, she wasn’t lying. She hadn’t been swallowing mouthwash instead of spitting it out or taking too many doses of cough syrup. This woman’s body naturally turns carbs into alcohol.
Upon further investigation, she was found to have Auto Brewery Syndrome. Earlier that evening she had food and drinks with her husband, and over the course of six hours she had four drinks. She got a flat tire on her way home and when someone stopped to help her, they noticed how drunk she was.
Doctors tested her blood over a twelve-hour period and found “without any drinks, her blood level was double the legal limit at 9:15 a.m., triple the limit at 6 p.m. and more than four times the legal limit at 8:30 p.m., which correlates with the same time of day that the police pulled her over.” She didn’t show signs of being drunk until her BAC was between 0.3 and 0.4.
The judge dismissed her case, but the district attorney’s office may put in for an appeal. The woman is trying to cure her disease with medicine and a strict low-carb diet to stop this from happening in the future.
And I thought I was a lightweight..
