I don’t know if it’s because I’m able to relate to them more or I’m simply way too, “Yay! Girl power!” for my own good, but I looooove female comics. 90 percent sure I gave Iliza Shlesinger a standing ovation the first time I saw War Paint – sure it was in my own living room and I was watching it sans pants alone, but still. It seems like with ladies like Amy Schumer, Ilana and Abbi, and Jenny Slate leading the way while Tina Fey and Amy Poehler looking approvingly down on them from the comedy heavens above, we’re heading into a sort of Female Comic Renaissance and I for one, am here for it.
*pounds gavel on desk* We need to support more ladies in comedy!
There are some other ladies besides our current favorites who are making the rounds and climbing up the comedy ladder. And while there’s always time to re-watch “You Don’t Need No Makeup” for the 8000th time, do yourself a solid and in between episodes of Broad City you’re inevitably binging, check some of these chicks out.
1. Nikki Glaser
You may recognize Nikki from various Inside Amy Schumer specials or maybe if in a Netflix haze you’ve stumbled across the special Women Who Kill. For memory sake she’s the spunky little blonde spouting off about having sex with a cop within twenty-three seconds of taking the stage. Love her yet? You should. She has two successful podcasts under her belt, and earlier this year her own Comedy Central show, Not Safe With Nikki Glaser, was green lit. Once the premiere date is announced I will be throwing a viewing party. Yes you’re all invited and yes, it’s BYOB.
2. Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci
Also known as Garfunkel and Oates, Riki and Kate are the dynamic dick joking comedy duo making sweet, sweet melodies for you to laugh at. It’s one thing to be funny, it’s another to be musically inclined so you’ve gotta give them some props. As actresses they’ve been around the block, but they’re truly dynamic when they’re a duo. Check out their little diddy explaining where babies come from. If you don’t spit out that PSL from laughing, I don’t want to be friends with you.
3. Megan Amram
You’ve absolutely seen someone retweet Megan Amram if you’ve spent any time at ALL on Twitter. It would almost be sacrilegious to not include her at this point because she’s pretty much universally recognized as one of the funniest people on the interwebz today. Every time there’s a “Funniest People Online” list written, Megan’s the first lady on the list. Oh. And she wrote for Parks and Recreation after casually graduating from Harvard. NBD.
4. Reasons I Don’t Have A Boyfriend
This web-series created by Molly McQueen and Caitlin Harris will simultaneously have you crying with laughter, and crying due to it’s accuracy. Binge watch all four episodes on your lunch break and follow them on Twitter for more things to send your sisters over a hungover group text.
5. Mamrie Hart
Mamrie Hart is the redheaded, Southern, booze filled woman we all wish we were. After studying improv at the PIT in New York, Mamrie found a home online with her fabulous show, You Deserve A Drink where she makes topical cocktails and encourages all of us watching to get sauced with her. While she’s admittedly in love with the internet (aren’t we all) Mamrie recently became a NYTimes Bestselling author with a memoir of the same name. And I’m not going to lie to you, I read that sucker from cover to cover. Mamrie is clearly a lady we all would like to get plastered with, and I highly recommend you also fangirl over her..
