Every now and then, you come across a story that is so ridiculous, so powerful and descriptive in its own right, that it almost needs no commentary. This is one of those stories.
As I’m sure you all are aware, disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner jumped back into the national spotlight when he announced that he was running for Mayor of New York City this past April. Weiner, who is married with a child, propelled to international fame two years ago for publicly tweeting a graphic sexual image of himself. Less than three weeks after the Weinergate scandal, he resigned from public office.
The problem with Weiner’s plan to remove the tarnish from his name and once again become a respected politician? The man is an idiot. Regardless of having resigned from U.S. Congress for sending naked pictures, he continued to do it. Of course, as they always do, the female recipients came forth and the pictures were released. Weiner, acting under the name more appropriate for a porn star than a politician, Carlos Danger, allegedly continued to send the inappropriate photos well into 2012. Despite this once again self-induced fall from grace, Weiner, accompanied by his wife (Huma Abedin, a longtime Hilary Clinton aide), announced that he would remain in the race.
Although Weiner clearly has a warped sense of entitlement, most members of the Democratic Party do not share in this delusion. Thus, the former Congressman does not exactly have the most veteran (or arguably intelligent) group of political operatives running his campaign. Unfortunately for Weiner, one of these said staffers, campaign Communications Director, Barbara Morgan, is not only a zygote in the world of campaigns; she’s also a moron.
After suffering through this past week, which involved the embarrassing resignation of Danny Kadem, the Campaign Manager, and a slandering expose on the campaign written by a former intern, Ms. Morgan was likely in over her head. The tell-all account, written by Olivia Nuzzi, and published in the New York Daily, was a no holds bar, “fuck you” to Weiner as well as his campaign staff.
After reading Ms. Nuzzi’s crippling article, where the former intern of one month claimed that Weiner referred to female interns as “Monica” and stated that his staff was at worst juvenile and inexperienced and at best, doing the job to get in the good graces of Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, the Communications Director flew into a tailspin. Olivia Nuzzi even went on to call Barbara Morgan out by name, claiming that Weiner was so unable to hire any reputable operatives, that he was forced to put Ms. Morgan in the coveted position of Communications Director, despite her only prior experience being that she worked for the New Jersey Education Commissioner.
Maybe it was the combination of a bad candidate and a stressful campaign, or maybe Barbara Morgan didn’t like her qualifications being questioned. Regardless, Ms. Morgan chose to address Olivia Nuzzi and her New York Daily expose head on.
Speaking to Talking Points Memo (TPM), an online political news organization, Barbara Morgan let everyone know exactly what she thought about her former intern. Rather than give a brief, politically correct statement, or going the all too common “the candidate has no comment at this time” route, Ms. Morgan responded to TPM’s questions with what might possibly be the most incriminating campaign release of all time.
Throwing caution to the wind and essentially ensuring her career in politics is over, Barbara Morgan ripped into Oliva Nuzzi calling her a “fucking slutbag,” a “fucking twat,” and a “little bitch.” She went on to say that Nuzzi practically begged for her job, stating “I can tell you she … like accosted me at like our petitioning thing to be able to become my intern, begged me to be my intern, sent me something within like 20 minutes of meeting her and then proceeded to — she came in the next day and was like, basically, ‘I want to be your bitch all summer long, that’s all I want to do is be your right hand person.’”
In perhaps the most offensive statement of her career-ending rant, Morgan spoke to her insecurities in regards to her resumé, saying, “And then like she had the fucking balls to like trash me in the paper. And be like, ‘His communications director was last the press secretary of the Department of Education in New Jersey,’ You know what? Fuck you, you little cunt. I’m not joking, I am going to sue her.”
After what can only be described as a few moments of hatred-fueled insanity, Ms. Morgan (either on her own or at the insistence of a fellow staffer), issued an apology. As of the time of this story, Anthony Weiner has not addressed the issue and there have been no hints alluding to his resignation from the race.
The problem with this rant is that while the fact that a campaign staffer went so far off the deep end is hysterical, the content itself is offensive. And it’s going largely unnoticed. After searching on the ‘Politics’ tab of the websites for three major news organizations, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, Fox is the only one prominently covering the story.
Why? Because this so called “War on Women” that Democrats have accused Republicans of doing for years is now happening in their own party. If a Republican male says that he is pro-life, then he is a misogynistic asshole better suited for the 18th century. But when a female speaks out over the fact that her former boss, a Democratic male, refers to his interns as “Monica,” in reference to the girl who once famously fellated President Bill Clinton? She is publicly shamed. She is called a whore, and a slut, and a bitch, and a cunt. She is told that she will never get a job in politics again. She is threatened with legal action.
Look, I am by no means a feminist, because personally, I don’t think that men owe me anything and I certainly don’t think that they hate me, and I quite honestly feel as though that is what the term has been perverted into meaning. Feminism, at its core, is the plight for equality. It is why the Seneca Falls Convention was held. It is why women marched for the right to vote. It is not, however, a term for the Democratic Party to use in order to shame women into thinking that if they identify with the Republican Party, they are turning the clock back on themselves one hundred years, but that is what it has become.
So, quite honestly, I’m a little pissed off that Anthony Weiner, a Democrat, is allowed to sexually harass his employees and no one cares. I’m a little pissed off that someone on his payroll felt it appropriate and acceptable to call a college student a cunt because she disagreed with what she had to say. I’m a little pissed off that the left wing, liberal media is blatantly ignoring this story because it doesn’t fit into the mold of them being the party of women, but so it goes, I reckon, for journalistic integrity died the day the media stepped into bed with the Democratic Party.
