If you’ve followed my writing at all, ever, you know I’m a big fan of the gays. If you haven’t, let me introduce myself. My name is Veronica, and I’m a big fan of the gays. Follow me on Twitter. When Mackelmore’s “Same Love” came out (no pun intended), I found myself sing-screaming about some chick keeping me warm just about every car ride home from work.
We find ourselves at a time in history where homophobic thoughts and ideas are not the norm. While I completely believe that anti-gay notions are disgusting, hateful, and wrong, I tend to lose sight of the fact that it probably sucks to be a member of a group whose beliefs are cast aside that way. Then, the other part of me remembers that people hate on me for not liking dogs, and they’re not even people. Hating people is bad.
Christian rapper “Bizzle”–no joke, he goes by Bizzle–rapped an anti-gay response to “Same Love,” and it’s intense. He compares gay people to pedophiles, saying “I was born this way” isn’t an excuse to give in to temptation. In the same song, he refutes any claim that the struggle gay Americans face parallels the struggles black Americans faced: discrimination, hate, being unable to marry anyone they wanted. No parallels.
In either case, whether you agree with him or not, his response is powerful. Gave me the chills.
