TSM readers, meet Betty, the 83-year-old grandmother from Indiana who is currently winning at this game called the World Wide Web. While most grandmothers spend their days drinking bourbon on the rocks and yelling at the maid (no? just mine?), Betty spends her days dancing to Pharell Williams (who, no big deal, happens to follow her) and posting funny pictures to Instagram. You see, Betty’s not like a normal grandma. She’s a cool grandma. And so it breaks our hearts to say that while, yes, Betty is the baddest bitch around, she’s also currently battling cancer — which is the reason that she’s on Instagram in the first place.
Grandma Betty, as she’s known on the photo sharing site, gained Internet fame when her great grandson, Zach, decided to chronicle her fight with terminal cancer as a way to gain awareness for the illness, as well as a way to keep his great grandmother entertained and occupied during the day. According to Zach, Betty wakes up every morning and eagerly asks how many new followers she’s gained overnight. She’s thrilled and humbled to have so many internet “friends” as she refers to them. Currently, Grandma Betty has over 170,000 followers.
