Emojis About To Become A Little Less Racist

A man wearing a turban, a Japanese boy, and an English guard walk into a bar. The creator of Emoji draws a sketch for funsies. Upon realizing that his new text message language consists largely of white dudes, he adds his new friends into the mix. And that is how diversity was born.

I don’t know about you, but the lack of diversity in emojis has kind of been a problem for me. What do you do when one of your friends hooks up with a black guy and you need a quick symbol to talk about him over text? What do you do when you want to accurately represent your sorority’s token Asian? And why does nobody realize that NOT EVERY PRINCESS IS FUCKING BLONDE?

Well, ladies, Apple heard your cries, and they are doing something about it. In a statement they gave to The Verge:

Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms. There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard.

What does this mean for the future? Perhaps a brown-haired, blonde-haired lesbian set for “a brunette and a blonde with an inseperable bond”? I can only hope there’s a man without a mustache. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll throw a ginger into the mix. The possibilities are endless.
