Among other things, Greeks have the horrible reputation of being homophobic. I never much understood it. There were gay men who were practically members of my sorority, and a girl in my pledge class came out when we were a little older. I’ve never really met a homophobe, but I know they’re out there and supposedly, they’re very much among us.
Greeks at the University of Western Ontario took a stand against homophobia as part of The Get Real Movement, whose aim is to stop discrimination and homophobia, starting with small communities. What better place to start than within a Greek community. The students remind us that we should be one of the most accepting communities. Statistically speaking, we all know someone. Most of us probably have a gay member. And who can they turn to if not their organization. After all, “It’s family. That’s what sorority life is. It’s family.”
