To my little sister,
The day is finally here. It’s your departure into the big world of all things collegiate: tailgates, themed parties, drunken nights (don’t worry, I won’t tell Mom). It’s your time to shine. As you prepare for formal recruitment, I can’t help but hide my excitement for you. Soon, you will experience the panic attacks and jitters of excitement that come along with finding a sisterhood that makes you feel at home.
While I can’t promise you won’t get cut, I can promise that they will love you. How could they not? As you go from house to house, make me proud and just be yourself. As intimidating as that may seem, all these girls are really looking for is someone they can be friends with, and that is the biggest secret to winning recruitment. The house you choose will be important. Those girls will be there for you as you grow up and develop into the smart, beautiful, and successful woman I know you are, and will continue to be.
As a big sister, it is my duty to look after you, beat up boys who are mean to you, and wipe away your tears when you cry. I wish I could be there for you as you endlessly change your major, stress about the “freshman 15,” and although you’ll deny it, maybe even get a little homesick. In my absence, I hope that in joining Greek life, you will find a sisterhood that supports, uplifts, and guides you like I hope I have. This is your time to find out who you really are–go out on a Monday, run for an executive position, find your bridesmaids, and most definitely leave with #noragrets.
