Love them or hate them, our initials are our initials. From the day we were born until the day some wealthy banker decides to change the last letter and add a roman numeral or three, we’re kind of stuck with them. So why not switch up your normal monogram and decorate with something that’s easier to customize to your personal style? No more stressing over interlock versus circle shape, or this cursive font versus that one. Here’s an easy way to make the three most important letters in the alphabet stand out in any room.
Craft: Bejeweled, Framed Initials
What You’ll Need:
3 8’’ x 10’’ picture frames (Note: It doesn’t matter what color they are because you’ll most likely paint over them anyway. I also chose three different styles of picture frames because I wanted to be faux-artsy and cool. You do not have to do this.)
3 wooden letters no taller than 8’’
2 oz. acrylic paint bottles (3 different colors)
Three colored rhinestone stickers
1’’ thick roll of double stick tape
Total Cost: $52 (But only $40.50 if you sweet talk the gay cashier at Michaels into giving you 30 percent off–love you, Eric!)
Total Time: Less than an hour (after letting the base paint on the frames and block letters dry overnight).
Choose three base paint colors for the frames and the block letters. I recommend choosing colors that match the décor of your space, because you don’t want your room looking like a combo of a bad tie-dye job and a gay pride parade. My dresser is light blue with an espresso brown finish, which is why I chose those two colors and white. Paint one frame and one block letter the same color. You can choose which colors to pair with which frame after they dry. Paint two coats, waiting 30 minutes in between each one, and let it harden overnight (…that’s what she said).
Step 2: Tape Letters To The Frame And The Frame To The Wall
Use the double stick tape to tape the block letters to the frames. Do not take the paper off of the other side of the tape until you’re ready to tape them to the wall, or wherever you want to hang your initials. If you can, I suggest nailing the frame into the wall, just as a backup if the double stick tape decides to go limp (…lawlz).
Step 3: Apply The Rhinestone Stickers
Apply the rhinestone stickers onto the frames. I chose to do it around the border, but it can be done in any pattern your little heart desires. If they start falling off, just paint a layer of clear rubber cement on top of them to hold them in place.
