Remember back in March when The University of Oklahoma SAE was caught doing an incredibly racist chant, and the media has been on Greek bootays ever since? Of course you do. Two students were expelled, twenty-five were disciplined, and the chapter as a whole pretty much committed social suicide, because everyone was racist shaming them.
Alas, OU is taking the bad press and the house of evils and turning it into something good — or at least into something good press. The former SAE house is being transformed into the Southwest Center for Human Relations (SWCHR) and the Disability Testing Center. The school calls SWCHR a “human relations and social justice organization that serves as a catalyst for promoting equity and human rights through education, research, advocacy, and collaboration for both university communities and society at large, transforming people and institutions to ensure opportunities for all,” meaning the building which once bred racism will now thwart it.
Other than the stench of beer, the holes in the wall that were never quite patched up, and the ominous presence of pledge tears, this seems like as good a location as any to talk about acceptance of all people regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. But ultimately, good on you, OU. You took a bad situation and made it very marginally less bad..
