Before Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid captured our hearts and our Instagram likes, there was “America’s Next Top Model.” This reality show had everything: hot girls, petty drama, tears, and all the best glam teams and fashion houses in the world. It was extra before extra was even a thing, and that’s mostly due to the show’s wacky panel of judges. For some reason beyond my understanding, ANTM will be ditching all previous panel judges like J. Alexander and Nigel Barker for an entirely new judging panel in this next season. But worst of all? They’re getting rid of Tyra and replacing her with Rita Ora.
Rita Ora, singer and “actress,” will be replacing Tyra Banks, worldwide supermodel. As the host of ANTM, Tyra offered contestants on the show her sage advice from her decades in the industry (and taught all of America how to smize), and Rita Ora will be bringing what to the table? How to hit a high note?
According to USA Today, these changes are an effort to make the show more pop-culture focused. Models aren’t just models anymore, as evident by the rise of models/social media stars Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. “It’s no longer just about having the highest cheekbones and best pout and the best hair,” Tyra Banks told the magazine. “My goal is to really get into these girls’ heads that I’m not looking for some successful model and I’m not looking for some social-media star. I’m looking for both. I’m looking for a hybrid, because that’s where the world is.”
The new judges are model Ashley Graham, Drew Elliott, chief creative officer of Paper magazine (the brains behind Kim Kardashian’s “Break the Internet” bare-booty cover); and stylist Law Roach, who works with stars like Zendaya and Ariana Grande. The magazine also reported that the weekly challenges will focus on pop culture instead of modeling.
“The approach I wanted to have as a host and judge to the girls is what my career stands for at this moment in time, which is being a businesswoman and being able to do multiple things at the same time, whether it’s music or shooting (magazine covers) and being in movies and designing clothes,” says Rita Ora.
They might as well rename the show “America’s Next Top Instagram Model.” .
