Lots of fraternity and sorority members use their time off during the summer to do good for others. Some national organizations sponsor service trips for their members over the break and individual members find ways to volunteer in their community. Bridget Anderson, a recent graduate of the Alpha Chi Omega chapter at the University of Florida, was spending her summer doing just that. She was participating in a “Bike and Build” event, which are cross-country bicycle trips which benefit affordable housing groups. Unfortunately, Bridget’s cross-country trip was cut short on Thursday morning when she was struck by a motorist.
After a stop in Tulsa on Sunday to do some work with Habitat for Humanity, Bridget and her biking group were continuing on to Wheeler, Texas when Thursday’s accident happened. The driver, who stated that she was looking at her phone, hit the cyclists on Highway 152 south of Elk City at 8:05 a.m. According to a statement from Bike and Build, another cyclist, Patrick Wanninkhof, was killed. Bridget sustained serious leg injuries and was airlifted to Oklahoma University Medical Center where she is in critical condition.
