In the wake of a heartbreaking cancer diagnosis, an entire Greek community showed its support. On Jan. 10, Victor Sandoval was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer in the white blood cells, after he felt strangely out of breath during a jog. He went to his college’s student health center and his blood work revealed the sad news.

Even though the situation was grim, his Sigma Nu brothers rallied around him in support. They started using “crowdfunding,” which pulls small amounts of money from large groups of individuals who are willing to donate to a cause. As of Monday, the GiveForward program had raised $1,115 for his family to help with their medical expenses.

However, this wasn’t good enough for Sigma Nu. They wanted to help their brother even more, and so did the entire Greek community at Cal State. Some of the fraternities are organizing a fundraiser that involves them shaving their heads.

Quinn Royston, a Sigma Nu with a heart of gold, has organized a lot of these efforts. He thinks that Greek life can rally around a cause that has close ties to their school and to someone they know. He said, “It is very different when you can say, ‘Look, I see the money and know exactly where it’s going because I told it where to go’ and that feels really good to be directly involved and know for a fact without any kind of doubt that it’s going to help someone.”

The media shines a harsh light on fraternities and sororities all the time, but situations like this show the support we have for each other is much stronger than anything negative.
