In my mind, domestic violence is the worst crime anyone can commit. How can you strike someone you’ve devoted your whole life to?
Back in February, Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice got into an altercation with his wife in an elevator and knocked her unconscious. The video footage of him dragging her body out of the elevator is tough to watch. The NFL investigated the incident and decided that a two-game suspension would be an appropriate punishment for Rice. That’s a mere slap on the wrist.
What is even more disgusting is that the NFL commissioner later admitted that the punishment was not enough, and he changed the penalty to a six-game suspension for the first offense and a lifetime ban for the second. To put that into perspective, the penalty for violating the league’s substance abuse policy is four games. FOUR GAMES. Ray Rice should be locked away for a long time and should never be allowed to run out of the tunnel on Sundays ever again.
New footage from inside the elevator has surfaced, and it is even more disturbing than the original. Rice punches his wife in the face and knocks her out instantly. Here is the video (WARNING: it’s violent):
The Ravens terminated Rice’s contract today after this video surfaced. The NFL also suspended indefinitely him from playing in the league. Do we really want our kids to look up to men like him (if you can even call Rice a man) as idols? The answer is a resounding no.
