In its peak, Friends had a myriad of celeb cameos including Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, and even the late Robin Williams. As the show became more popular, more celebrities came to check out all the hype at Central Perk. Supermodel Elle Macpherson played Joey’s short-term girlfriend/roommate Janine for a few episodes, and apparently has some regrets about taking the role in the first place.
Macpherson’s character only had a short story arc on the hit show due to the fact that her character didn’t get along with any of Joey’s friends, causing a rift between the two. It was a short-lived but cute cameo, nonetheless. Elle claims, “If I’d known how important it was in the U.S., or how long it would be on TV, I may not have chosen to do it,” Apparently the pressure of being on a show that left such a large legacy can cause a lot of stress. “It was a lot of pressure if you look at it in the way that it will be around for 20 or 30 years.” Elle adds. She was originally asked to be on more episodes, but declined because she was living in London at the time.
While most fans seem to enjoy her small role on the show, her regrets are honestly insightful. It’s important for an actor or actress to consider how their work may exist in the future. Elle didn’t seem to dislike her time on the show. Matt LeBlanc was a “great working partner” and also apparently a “good kisser.” Phew, we were all worried. Don’t worry, Elle, Friends stars seem to remember you fondly, even if your relationship with Joey didn’t work out in the end. .
