Ellen Surpasses Obama With The Most Retweeted Photo Of All Time

Screen Shot 2014-03-03 at 12.04.57 PM

Ellen DeGeneres for president 2016, anyone? The Academy Awards host took what was most certainly the best selfie of all time, and that includes every post-makeup and pre-party snap you’ve ever attempted. This victory is accredited to the fact that the photo included the most badass A-list celebrities to grace our lowly presence and light up our screens: Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum, Jared Leto, Bradley Cooper, and Lupita Nyong’o…and her brother #StillCounts.

There were so many hotties crammed into the frame that Ellen actually had to ask Bradley Cooper to take the pic, and then she captioned the picture via Twitter with, “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars.” Cooper did a solid job of including everyone in the frame, which I consider a marvelous feat, considering that most of us can barely include our hair in the frame without resembling Mr. Potato Head. Then again, you don’t have to worry about flattering angles when Jennifer Lawrence is included.

The picture unsurprisingly broke the record for the most retweeted tweet ever. It needed more than 780,063 to pass the iconic “four more years” tweet from Obama in November 2012, including a photo of the president hugging the first lady. The Oscar selfie beat Barack’s tweet in about 35 minutes, and now it has more than 2.8 million RTs and counting.

The only downside to the selfie was the fact that Liza Minnelli was actually standing behind the group, which you probably didn’t know. Poor Liza, who is a mere 5’4″, strained as hard as her miniature stature would allow, but couldn’t seem to make it into the picture. Maybe if someone had pulled up a stool, she could’ve been a part of the cool crowd. But I don’t think anyone wanted to help, because she, for some reason, didn’t wear a bra, and that was just really uncomfortable for all parties involved.

It’s almost humorous that some of the buzz from the 2014 Oscars stems not from the awards given and the quality of films this past year, but from a slightly blurry self portrait taken on a smart phone. Some are upset with this, and claim it reflects so much about our age’s egotism and self-regard, but the real reason everybody loves this selfie is simple. It shows that stars are just like us. Not even A-list celebs are above cramming into a poorly framed selfie with friends to have a laugh and preserve a memory in the most relatable way possible–it shows us their lives are not consumed with the typical glamour that Hollywood broadcasts.

Ellen informed her selfie pals that “we made history” around 11 p.m. EST. But let’s be honest: judging by her face in the picture, she already knew they would.
