Fraternity Do-Gooders Buy Land To Build House For Homeless Family

Most fraternities and sororities participate in philanthropy. It’s a core part of who we are and what we do, and lots of organizations do wonderful things to benefit those that are less fortunate than themselves. But one fraternity at Kean University in New Jersey is taking it to another level.

On Valentine’s Day, the city of Newark, NJ, ran a promotion where people could purchase a plot of land for a reduced price, as long as they agreed to keep the land and live on it for five years. Kean’s Beta Xi chapter of Iota Phi Theta took advantage of the promotion and bought one of the plots for $1,000. But instead of building some kind of secondary frat house for themselves, the chapter has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise the funds to have a prefabricated house placed on the lot, which they will give to a family that is currently living at the Sierra House Homeless Shelter in East Orange, NJ.

Iota Phi Theta senior Tosin Oduwole told News12, “I see a chance to change someone’s life. We want to teach that to new people soon to join [the fraternity], that we continually and forever will do what we can to give back to our community. I want to be 60 years old and this initiative our organization is doing is still happening.”

We hope so too.
