I don’t know about you, but I find watching the Oscars to be an arduous process. From the three-hour long red carpet, to the three-hour long actual show, to Khloé Kardashian pretending she actually watched the broadcast in lieu of reapplying bronzer all night during the after show, all in all, it gets to be a long night. But, just when you’ve given up, a surprising moment will catch you off-guard and make the whole thing worthwhile (I’ve also been told this is what raising a child is like – thank God I don’t actually know if that’s true).
Case and point: Patricia Arquette showed some serious Spice Girls-era girl power hutzpah during her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress last night when she stood up for women’s equal rights – including (and most importantly to my bone dry bank account) equal pay. Hell yeah.
The Boyhood star took to the stage and went through the routine thanks (children, boyfriend, blah, blah, blah) and then in her final moments shouted: “It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America.”
Patricia’s word were greeted with thunderous applause, especially by my life mentors Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez. Meryl and JLo actually got out of their seats and did a little “woop, woop” motion while saying “Yes. YES!” I’m sure that, like me, Patricia thought that was an even greater achievement than winning an Oscar.
So, slow clap for Patricia, everybody. Honestly, it’s kind of dumbfounding that some guy the cubicle over from me gets paid more for – oh, yeah – the exact same damn job. So I wholeheartedly support her sentiment. And you should also, ladies. After all, who says you can’t marry the cute doctor and make more than him, too?.
