New York Fashion Week Is About To Introduce A Woman With Down Syndrome To The Runway For The First Time

Meet The First Woman With Down Syndrome To Walk At New York Fashion Week

Fashion week — the one glorious week of year when the craftiest people in the world team up with the most beautiful to show us a glimpse into trends we’ll never be able to understand, pull off, or afford. And while this year isn’t stacked up to be any different in those areas, there is something new on the New York fashion docket this season – and let’s just say it’s going to talk the catwalk by storm. Her name is Jamie Brewer and when she makes her debut at the Carrie Hammer show later this week, she’ll also become the first woman with Down syndrome to ever grace the runway.

Well known for her role on “American Horror Story,” Brewer will be strutting her stuff as part of Carrie Hammer’s “Role Models Not Runway Models” initiative, a campaign designed to represent the real women who buy her designs, according to E! online. “I called up my existing clients who were all incredible women,” Hammer told “The Today Show” in an interview earlier this month. “It was never intended to be this incredible statement.”

But that’s what it became. In the same interview, Brewer spoke to what being in the fashion show meant to her: “Young girls and even young women…[see me] and say ‘hey, if she can do it so can I. It’s a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and showing who they are.”

And as for the actual design Brewer will be strutting down the runway, Hammer created a customized black A-line dress that’s said to accentuate her tiny waist and curves. “It’s amazing, it’s really neat. Many women have many sides to their personality, this dress fits…mine,” Jamie says. “I am honored to be in it.”

We’re honored too, Jamie. We’re honored too.
