Rejoice! You Can Finally Escape Those Annoying Group Texts

Picture this. Your phone is beeping uncontrollably. At first, you feel pretty and popular. Then you realize that you’re part of a group text and you can’t escape. While I’m a firm proponent of avoiding FOMO, there are some texts better left unread.

Luckily, the future is finally here, because now you can leave group texts that don’t involve you. My little was once added to a fraternity’s group text about hazing, with messages like “WELCOME TO THE THUNDER DOME” and information on where to meet. I’m glad she wasn’t able to unsubscribe, because it provided endless entertainment. However, other group texts are not as LOLworthy when you’re just trying to Tinder without interruption.

This electronic innovation was announced at WWDC, Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. The conference showed off some incredible technological advances, but I firmly believe this is the most useful one to Greek life and pledge classes everywhere. The conference also introduced a way for your phone to act as a remote control for your entire house, which means “Smart House” is real–and everyone knows sorority girls love a good Disney Channel original movie.

With iOS8, users will be able to unsubscribe from the annoyance of useless group chats. There will be a “do not disturb” feature, or you can always just leave. I’m proud of Apple for bringing the Irish Exit to the digital age. Next step? Being able to delete drunk texts before your intended audience reads them. Then it will really be the future.
