Rihanna sees you doing work, work, work, work, work, work in your classes and she wants to help you pay for the expensive piece of paper that is your college degree. She announced on Monday that she’s launching a global scholarship program through her nonprofit, the Clara Lionel Foundation. The Foundation was started in 2012 by Riri herself and “works [haha] to improve the quality of life for communities globally in the areas of health, education, arts, and culture.” Rihanna has already done amazing work with the Foundation, like establishing and purchasing the equipment for The Clara Brathwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine in Barbados, so that cancer patients in the Caribbean can receive treatment.
Rihanna’s next mission is tackling the issue many people face: how to pay for college. Unfortunately for most of us, Rihanna’s scholarship program will only assist citizens or natives of Brazil, Barbados, Cuba, Haiti, Grenada, Guyana, and Jamaica in pursuing higher education in the United States. The scholarships handed out will be based on need, but will range from $5,000 to $50,000 and may be renewed up to three years.
“To be able to give the gift of an education is actually an honor,” Rihanna explained in a statement yesterday. “Higher education will help provide perspective, opportunities, and learning to a group of kids who really deserve it. I am thrilled to be able to do this.”
To qualify, you must have already been accepted to a four-year college or university for fall of 2016. Applicants will be judged on academic performance, leadership skills, school participation, community service, work experience, and a personal essay. You’ll hear back from Rihanna by August if you win any money.
Rihanna never forgets her roots, and even though most Americans won’t benefit directly from her scholarship, she’s doing an incredible thing for the many other people around the world who would kill for an opportunity to attend college in the states. It’s inspiring how a celebrity so big can still be so generous and humble. I can only hope that the scholarship checks comes with a signed album and a motivational message from Queen Rih herself.
