"Temps" Is The Only Movie That Shows What Dating In Your Twenties Is Really Like

When my roommate was little, her mom made her take bowling lessons — not because she thought bowling would somehow become a popular sport in the town’s high school, but because she thought her daughter should learn to bowl for all the dates she’d eventually go on. My own mom still refers to Friday night as “date night,” as she remembers her youth fondly, when she began each weekend with a new beau. As a kid, I watched sitcom after sitcom, and my favorite characters were constantly meeting guys in coffee shops, and bookstores, and the supermarket, and every guy was asking them on dates.

As I got to college, I wondered when the dates would come. The closest I got was a lunch at a bagel shop once, because I ran into a guy I’d been sleeping with. Surely, after college, that’s when the dates would rush in. But postgrad life came and went…well, I suppose it never really “goes,” and here I am, still largely dateless, aside from a few encounters from guys I meet on Bumble.

The way to get a boyfriend in the modern world, from what I’ve seen, is simple. You meet a guy drunk, go home with him, and hope he still likes you enough in the morning to want to see you again. The morning is when you win guys over. From there, you hopefully have another night…and another morning. And if enough mornings go well, you eventually hang out sober on purpose. You don’t start dating until after you start sleeping together. It’s sad, but it’s the world we live in.

And that, my friends, is something that Temps gets right. It’s the only movie to date that has ever accurately depicted what twenty-somethings are actually doing in the dating world. Why? Because much like Girls, the only other show I’ve ever felt (semi-)accurately portrays life in your twenties, it was produced (in part) by people in their twenties. Re: us, Grandex media.

Temps creates a world where there are no glamorous apartments. There is no love at first sight. There’s not even a date. There’s a dude who has flags hanging from his bedroom wall, and a girl who’s absolutely batshit about becoming FBO. It’s the world we live in.

With scenes like this…

And this…

And this…

It’s v relatable. 10/10 would recommend. Temps is now an “iTunes Best-Seller,” and you can find it in the top 10 charts for romance, Indie, and comedy. So what are you waiting for? Rent or buy Temps on iTunes now!
