It’s 2014, and women can pretty much do anything — except make the same amount of money as men. We can’t do that. Currently, for every dollar a man makes, a woman makes 77 cents. Unless of course you are a female minority, in which case, you make 64 cents to every dollar a man makes. On average, a normal woman will miss out on $11,000 a year solely because of her sex. And you know what? That comes out to $500,000 in her lifetime. Half a million dollars. Pretty messed up, huh?
The worst part about this pay gap is that some people (men) refuse to acknowledge the fact that it’s even an issue because it apparently reflects the choices women make and also the time we spend away from the workplace. Uhhh. You know why we’re away from the workplace? Because we’re having babies. We’re in the hospital pushing humans out of our bodies. We’re on maternity leave, sleeping two hours a night, making sure this tiny, little person doesn’t die. We’re playing mommy, and business professional, and cook, and housekeeper, and partner for our husband, and bookkeeper, and taxi driver, and sexual goddess, and business trip traveler, and “I missed an hour of work today because my kid had a doctor’s appointment and my husband couldn’t take time off, so now I get to go home, make dinner, tuck the kids into bed, and work until midnight to play catchup.” We’re literally creating, harboring, and raising the next generation of people. We’re ensuring that the human race does not become extinct. And all the while, we’re making 77 cents to every dollar a man makes — and getting told it’s our fault.
