A few months ago, we were told a beautiful tale. It was filled with magic pills that would lead to an awesome sex life. In this story, women had a Viagra-like medication to help them get “in the mood.” In this story, everyone lived orgasmically ever after.
Two months ago, we were told that a pill that could help women with low libido was in the works. So in the works, in fact, that is was completed, tested, and sought after. The only thing in the way was the FDA’s approval.
Yesterday, on August 18, the Associated Press announced that for the first time in history, ladies would finally have some medicated help to getting off.
This is a pretty big deal, because this pill, called Addyi, had been denied approval twice in the past. But who cares, but it’s here now, and it’s literally everything.
Sprout Pharmaceuticals, the company behind this happy pill, released information on our new favorite drug:
A once-daily, non-hormonal pill for the treatment of acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. Addyi is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for this condition, the most common form of female sexual dysfunction, affecting up to 1 in 10 women in the United States. Flibanserin has been studied in more than 11,000 women….For premenopausal women with HSDD, Addyi has demonstrated improvements in desire for sex, reducing distress from the loss of sexual desire and increasing the number of satisfying sexual events.
Still, because we’re women and things can never go just right for us, the pill isn’t expected to be as big of a hit as it’s male counterpart. Some people are on the fence about the actual results, and the side effects can get bad. The FDA approved the pill as long as the label said some really downer things. Stuff like “this medication should not be taken with alcohol, yeast infection medication (yeah, wtf), and can cause fainting and low blood pressure.”
So if that makes you feel totally unsexy, there’s now a pill for that! Despite the label and the years the FDA dragged their feet on this, it really is a ground breaking moment for female sexuality. Addyi is set to be released on October 17, and finally, women everywhere will be able to pop a pill and get off.
Hear that? That’s women, and vaginas, everywhere finally being satisfied. Equality, guys. It feels pretty freaking great..
