The Great Debate: What It Means To Be Called Cute v. Hot v. Beautiful

Hot Cute Beautiful

“I’d rather be called beautiful than hot.”

I’ve heard this sentence a thousand times. And a thousand times in my head I have calculated all the little ways that it’s such bullshit. I’ve had this discussion with my girlfriends hundreds of times. Would you rather be called hot, cute, or beautiful? I’m here to break down the logistics of what each really mean, and why you should prefer one compliment over the other.

Beautiful

Beautiful comes in dead last in this competition. Some of you are shaking your head at me right now, probably even exiting out of the article, but hear me out. What straight, sex-driven guy, has ever sincerely called someone beautiful? They are either A.) gay B.) telling you what you want to hear or C.) gay. When that guy is sitting with his friends telling them about you, there is no way in hell they are saying, “Bro, she’s so beautiful, I just don’t even know what to do.” When a guy calls you beautiful, he’s doing what society tells him is “romantic.” it’s not in his vocabulary. It’s not how guys are wired. Sure, he may think that you are beautiful and have a good heart and all that other lovey dovey crap, but deep down, he’s doing what he’s seen on “The Notebook,” not what he actually thinks.

Hot

Human beings are designed to be sexually attracted to one another. If a guy calls you hot, you don’t have to worry about whether or not he sexually desires you. If your personality sucks, and all you have to offer is your sexuality, that’s nobody’s fault but your own. Being called hot comes in number two on the list because although he is sincere in what he is saying, it normally only considers the outside appearance.

Cute

I used to despise being called cute. It made me feel like I was twelve years old. No, I’m not a cute little girl, I am a sexy, grown woman (except I’m not, so, whatever). But the older I get, the more I realize that being called cute is probably the best compliment you can receive from a significant other. Being “cute” encompasses both your physical attributes as well as your character and personality. If he thinks you are cute, he is going to think you are physically attractive. If he thinks you are cute, he thinks there’s something special about your personality that radiates little freakin cuteness. If you are an innocent little angel with a heart of gold (yawn), you are cute, he is attracted to that. If you are the life of the party that is always making everybody laugh, you are cute, he is attracted to that. Being called cute isn’t an insult, it’s a pretty great compliment!

Don’t get me wrong, I’d take any of these compliments from a semi-attractive male if he started slinging them at me. Except if he called me beautiful, then I would run for the hills.
