The Hardest Part About Being The Only Single Friend

Unless you somehow found the Cory to your Topanga in the sandbox at age 3, you’ll find that during one point or another, you can relate to being the only single friend. If this feeling doesn’t sound familiar to you, then you most certainly cannot sit with us. Kidding! Kind of. You are welcome to continue reading along with us free spirits. But don’t you dare ask to bring a plus one.

Being a single twenty-something is the epitome of an impulse dance floor makeout, devouring 4 pieces of pizza at 2:00 AM, or anything else that feels good for one minute and like the biggest mistake of your life the next. First it’s sweet, then it’s sour. Or first it’s sour, then it’s sweet – depending on how good a kisser he was or how badly you wanted that pizza. You can go from dancing on tables and soaking in your freedom to crying off your mascara in the bathroom because you just want someone to love you when you’re cuddled up in sweats, downing a pint of Froyo while watching Ali choose Noah for the hundredth time.

Arguably, the hardest part about being a perpetually single girl is witnessing all of the young love in the air around you. Your friend is going to be late because she has to call her boyfriend. Your neighbor is busy for dinner because it’s date night. Your sister is too busy planning her wedding to think about joining you for happy hour. While it may seem like this is the end of the world, there are other things you can focus on to feel like less of a loner in a world of relationships.

This is a unique time to focus on yourself and your friendships. There is no better time to learn about who you are and what you are looking for in your partner. Some people are meant to grow together, while others may need some time to learn on their own before they are ready for a commitment. Remind yourself that being on your own will give you time to explore not only who you want to be, but what you want to do and where you want to do it. Someday, you will look back on this time and be thankful you had a chance to mold your own lifestyle before deciding to share it with someone else.

It may not seem like it, but your prince is out there – somewhere between shotgunning cans of warm Keystone and perfecting the amount of time it takes to microwave a bag of pizza rolls. Seriously, let him get it out of his system.

I’ve been told he’ll be worth the wait.

GirlMeetsTheRealWorld

GirlMeetsTheRealWorld is a young twenty-something working in the entertainment industry. Appropriately, her life could also pass as its own sitcom. She believes in knowing the drink specials better than the waiter, the importance of vertical running, never settling for less than Chuck Bass standards, and remembering that no matter where life takes you, you can always bring your friends. Life's tough - but she always has her helmet. If that doesn't work? Whatever, she's getting cheese fries.
