We’re not a news site. Never have been, never will be. Sure, we cover the latest Greek scandal, the newest condom flavor, and how tight Ryan Gosling’s abs happened to look while vacationing in Jamaica. It’s great, it’s entertaining — and it’s fluff.

Yes, it’s “news” to some degree, but is it really? It’s great to be mindlessly entertained, great to take your brain out of your skull for twenty minutes a day and have funny stories make you laugh, great to know about the latest “Housewives” scandal, great to know where Lindsey Lohan’s coke is coming from. It’s kitchen table talk, having a vodka rocks with the girls talk, avoiding studying at all costs talk. But it’s not news. It’s not compelling. It doesn’t inspire and it certainly does not educate. And because we are a site by young women for young women, we’ve realized that we want to do more than entertain you — we want to inform you, as well. Think of this as the “SparkNotes” of current events — just enough information to make your parents think you actually read the paper, without having to do any real work. Save the “thank yous,” ladies, you’re already welcome.

U.S. Crime:

  • Following the high school shooting in Oregon, President Obama held a question and answer session on Tumblr. He claimed that the U.S. is “the only developed country on Earth where this happens” and that as a nation, we must do “some soul searching.”

  • Two priests were shot in a Catholic church in Phoenix, Arizona. One man died and the other is in critical condition. Authorities have no leads or suspects.

  •  An Alabama teenager, Marissa Williams, was arrested for attempting to hire a hit man to kill her family. Williams, who contacted a strange man online, requested that he pay her cellphone bill in exchange for sex and then requested that he kill her aunt, uncle, and cousin. Unbeknownst to Williams, the “man” she’d been talking to was actually her own aunt, who, in attempt to teach her niece the dangers of online dating, realized just how disturbed the young girl really was. The teenager admitted to the plan and is being held in Tuscaloosa.

U.S. Politics:

  • The gun debate continues in Washington following Monday’s school shooting.
Google Buzzwords: gun violence, gun control
  • Republicans are in a frenzy following Eric Cantor’s loss in Virginia’s 7th District primary. Cantor, the current House Majority Leader, is expected to relinquish his leadership position soon. Obviously, Republicans fear what this means for the party come the November elections. With a Democratic President and Democratic majority in the Senate, it does not look good for Republicans to have such an important leader in the House lose his seat to a relatively unknown candidate in the primary.

U.S. Economy:

  • During a speech to the Economic Club of New York, Jack Lew, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, stated that the economy obviously still faces challenges. The unemployment rating currently sits at 6.3 percent and has finally recouped the jobs lost during the Great Recession of 2007. Still, there is much work to be done.

World News:

  •  Iraq continues to be in great turmoil as al-Queda members continue to threaten the country that has now been without U.S. occupation for three years. Mosul, the country’s second largest city fell to militants on Tuesday and al-Queda has stated that the next stop is the capital city of Baghdad. The Iraqi army is reportedly in shambles and disarray, as soldiers and commanders alike are beginning to flee the war torn country. It is unclear at this point in time whether or not the U.S. will intervene.

  • Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. Army Sergeant who was traded for five Guantanamo Bay detainees in exchange for his release from the Taliban after having been held prisoner for five years, is under even more scrutiny after his Facebook page was unearthed by the Associated Press. Bergdahl’s capture and recent release have caused major outcry and a heated national debate, and the finding of his personal social media page — revealing journal entries —  only adds to this deeply layered and complex story. Bergdahl’s Facebook, as well as unearthed private journals, paint the picture of a deeply troubled man who defiantly questioned authority. Many citizens, military personnel, and members of Congress have spoken out against the U.S.’ handling of Bergdahl, calling him a “deserter” and vehemently opposing President Obama’s breach of the U.S. policy to never negotiate with terrorists.
