This Real Life “A Walk To Remember” Love Story Will Give You Chills

A Walk to remember

Remember watching “A Walk To Remember” and sobbing your eyes out because it was just, so sad? Sure you do. You were 13(ish), had never been kissed, and being in high school and having to deal with high school problems seemed so far away.

But then you entered high school. For most of us, that involved finding your first love, losing a little bit of your dignity, and feeling like life, and your teenage years, would last forever. One high school couple however, did not feel the same way.

It was a classic love story for Omar Al Shaikh and Amie Cresswell, until it wasn’t. They started dating eight months after Omar went into remission for acute myeloid leukemia. They shared secrets, laughs, and hopes. They created memories. They dreamed of a future. They fell in love.

But then Omar’s leukemia came back.

Despite hoping that something could be done, the doctors told a devastated young couple and their heartbroken parents that he most likely had less than a week to live. That’s when Amie stepped up and decided to make his last week, the best week of his life.

According to Cosmopolitan, Amie wanted to turn Omar’s dying wish of marrying his high school sweetheart into reality. She proposed, and the two got married in the hospital, surrounded by their loved ones.

Three days later, Omar passed away while holding onto Amie’s hand. She spoke out to Metro about what a painful, beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime experience it was.

I’m absolutely heartbroken. We had talked about getting married but never imagined we would be 16. We thought we would grow old together. The ceremony was so sad, but really lovely. As he put the ring on my finger he said he wished he had more time with me. I wish we had too, but I’m so glad we had the chance to make this happy memory.

His parents were overcome with grief, but felt blessed that they received a beautiful daughter-in-law. Despite the pain, Amie knows that Omar will always be with her, and the feelings that they shared were real, and will last a lifetime. In a true Landon and Jamie sentiment, “Their love is like the wind. They can’t see it, but they can feel it.”
